Our History

Where did we begin?

Auckland Coastguard's early history is marked by passion and dedication to maritime safety. Over the decades, it has evolved into a professional and essential service, continuing to provide assistance to those in need.

Early Years

During the 1930's, the number of boaties in Auckland was on the rise and so was the need for maritime safety measures. Passionate local boaties began using their own private vessels to establish an independent rescue service in their area, determined to prevent any maritime tragedies.

Auckland Coastguard began in 1934, and was run with mostly Private Rescue Vessels (PRV's) until the early 2000's. Our last PRV was Kyrenia who retired from service in 2013.

In the 90's, we began having dedicated rescue vessels that were purpose fitted for search and rescue operations. We had our first custom built 'heavy' come into service in 2004 - Lion I. The original Auckland Coastguard has now been split into 9 units, Kawau, Hibiscus, North Shore, Howick, Waiheke, Maraetai, Thames, Great Barrier and us.
